Fourteen

Matt had arranged to meet Kitty outside the town hall in a small side street. He had judged that there would be a great deal of interest in the inquest. Not just from newspapermen, but also locals due to Councillor Everton’s long years of public service. Usually the inquest would have been held in a local hostelry or at the police station, but the county coroner had felt a larger room would be more appropriate in this case.

Mr Potter’s taxi pulled up near where he was waiting, and Kitty hopped out of the back. She had dressed in her warm black coat and matching hat, clearly judging that a sombre note was called for. Her fair hair and skin were pale next to the dark colour as she hurried over to meet him.

‘I’m not late, am I? The ferries were busy this morning due to the early hour and then Torquay itself seems to be full of people and a lot of them were headed in this direction.’

Matt smiled at her, his spirits lifting as usual whenever he was in her company. ‘Mr Schofield has kindly said he will let us in through a side door so we can avoid running the gamut of people entering through the front of the town hall.’

‘That is most kind of him. I need to tell you what I found out yesterday while I was at Cockington.’ She fell into step beside him and quickly told him of Lavinia’s conversation.

He let out a low whistle of surprise. ‘It seems that Mr King is indeed up to something, but who is his partner? He hasn’t the ability to sway a committee decision alone.’

‘Ivor Silitoe would be my guess, but he might prove very slippery,’ Kitty said as they halted before a small nondescript door set in the side of the building.

Matt gave a tap on the door and heard the chink of keys on the far side. The door opened a crack and Mr Schofield peeped out. On seeing Matt, he opened the door wider and ushered them inside, relocking the door behind them.

‘This is very good of you, Mr Schofield,’ Matt said.

‘It’s greatly appreciated. There seems to be quite a large crowd pressing for admission in the reception area. I saw it from the taxi when I arrived,’ Kitty said.

‘My pleasure, miss.’ The elderly man favoured her with a small bow.

They followed him along the corridor that Matt remembered from the previous day, stopping shortly partway along for Mr Schofield to open another door. ‘These are the staff stairs. If you go up one flight it will bring you out right by the chamber where the inquest is to be held.’

Matt thanked the man and followed Kitty as she hurried up the stairs. Ahead of them he could hear the hustle and bustle of people and murmur of voices. A harassed-looking uniformed constable was at the entrance to the chamber overseeing the admission and seating of the public.

Matt guided Kitty through the small crowd and gave their names to the constable.
